Interesting In Court Reporting? 4 Things To Know About This Occupation
If you have ever watched a court television show, or been in a real courtroom, you have seen a court reporter. A court reporter is the individual who recorders everything that happens.
#1 Have to Go to Court-Reporting School
If you want to be a court reporter, you must go to a court reporting school that is recognized by the state that you are residing in. You must complete the full course of training at the court reporting school, and you must earn a certification of completion. You will earn a stenography degree from the court reporting school. Depending on the set-up of the school, you may just earn a certification, or you may earn an associate degree. Financial aid may be available for your studies, or you can take out educational loans.
#2 Have to Become Certified
Going to court reporter school is not enough. Once you finish court reporting school, you then must take the state examination for court reporters. Once you pass the state certification exam, you will earn your licenses. The licenses will allow you to practice as a court reporter in the state where you took the test.
If you want to further improve your credentials, you can continue your court reporting education and work towards earning a certification from the National Court Reporting Association (NCRA).
#3 Court Reports Record What Is Happening
Court reports record what is happening in the courtroom. They must type very fast and be very accurate when they type. They must be able to understand and hear what people are saying, regardless of how fast or slow they talk, or what type of accent they have, or the language they learn.
#4 Court Reporters Use Special Machines
Court reports type on a special machine. This special machine is called a steno machine or a stenography machine. The keys on this machine looks a little more like an old-school typewriter. The keys are not regular keys though; the keys show phonetic sound instead of letters. You must be able to hear the sounds that someone is making, not just the words that they are saying.
There is a demand for court reporters across the country. It is a job that you can do anywhere in the United States where there is a job opening, as long as you take the certification for being a stenographer in that state.
